If Your Twin Gets Lost While Traveling

Traveling Alone with MultiplesJust last year at a local Mommy and Me event, I lost sight of one of my twins among all the children. Of course he says he wasn’t lost since he knew where he was, resting behind a bounce house, but after looking in every bounce house I couldn’t find him.

One of my biggest fears when traveling alone with my twins is loosing one. Children are easily distracted by everything they see, and having to keep a hold of not one but two children the same age who are running in different directions can be challenging.

With the help of recent photographs on my smart phone, his twin brother who was dressed identically, and security personnel, he was found 10-15 minutes later. That was one of the scariest moments of my life.

This wasn’t the first time one of our twins had become separated from me or my husband while attending an event. No matter how good of a parent you are, sometimes the unthinkable happens and you can get separated from your children in large crowds.

Here are a few suggestions from our experiences to help you be prepared even before your child gets lost. If your child does get lost, always notify event security or the police right away.

Preparing for the Unthinkable – If Your Twin Gets Lost While Traveling

  • Take a photograph with your smart phone of your children as you are leaving the house or when you get to your destination. If one of your children happen to get lost, it will be easy to forward this photograph from your smart phone to security personnel or the police to help aid in locating your child safely. Try to take a photograph with a neutral, or boring background, so your children stand out as the focus of the picture. I still do this with all of my children as you can see in the photograph above from our recent trip to the El Dorado County Fair.
  • If you don’t have a smart phone, don’t be afraid to dress your twins or multiples alike. Since you will be panicked and stressed if you have a child missing, you might forget important details of what your child is wearing when giving a description to security or the police. Instead, when asked for a description of your lost child and what they are wearing, it will be easy to look to the child still with you for important details.
  • SafetyTat makes a temporary tattoo you can personalize with your cell phone number for your child to wear if they get lost. Security or police will be able to easily contact you and you will be reunited with your child quickly if your child has your cell phone number on them. This is especially helpful with children who are too young to talk, or to learn your phone number.

Being proactive and planning for the worse case scenario when traveling can help you be prepared for the unthinkable. Always remember, if your child is lost don’t panic and don’t hesitate to notify security or the police. The earlier the authorities can begin searching for your lost child, the higher chance you will have of finding your child quickly.
